Short answer

Google ranks businesses on Maps by three things: relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (reviews, photos, links and activity). You cannot change distance, so win on relevance and prominence: the right category, complete profile, steady reviews, real photos and weekly posts.

1. Understand the three ranking factors

Google itself says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what someone typed. Distance is how far you are from them. Prominence is how well known and trusted you are: reviews, rating, photos, mentions on other websites and how active your profile is.

A shop in Dum Dum will almost always appear before a shop in Behala when someone searches in Dum Dum. That is distance, and no trick changes it. Your job is to be the most relevant and most trusted option within your area.

2. Pick the most accurate primary category

Your primary category is the strongest relevance signal. Choose the one that describes what you mainly do, for example Dentist instead of Medical clinic, or Boutique instead of Clothing store. Add a few secondary categories only if you really offer those services.

3. Fill every field, honestly

Business name exactly as on your signboard (no extra keywords), exact address and map pin, phone, website, opening hours including Sunday and holidays, services or products with descriptions, and a 750-character description written for customers.

4. Add real photos every month

Upload photos of the outside (so people recognise you), inside, team, products and work. Phone photos are fine if they are bright and sharp. Add a few new ones every month; an active profile looks open and cared for.

5. Ask every happy customer for a review

Reviews are the biggest prominence signal you control. Ask right after the job, in person and with a short WhatsApp message that contains your direct review link. Aim for a steady flow, two to five a week, rather than twenty in one day.

6. Reply to every review

Thank people by name and mention what you did for them. For a bad review, stay calm, apologise for the experience and offer to fix it offline. Future customers read your replies.

7. Post an update every week

Use Google posts for offers, new work, festival timings or a quick tip. Each post should have a photo and one clear button: Call, WhatsApp or Learn more.

8. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere

Justdial, Facebook, your website, IndiaMART and other directories should show exactly the same details as Google. Mismatches confuse Google and customers.

9. Build a simple website page for each main service

A website that clearly says what you do and where you are helps relevance. Link it from your profile and add your address and a map on the contact page.

10. Track and repeat

Check the Performance section of your profile every month: searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Do more of what moved those numbers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Adding city names or keywords to your business name (risks suspension)
  • Buying or swapping fake reviews
  • Making ten profile edits in one day
  • Using a virtual office address you do not actually work from

Questions

How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?

Most local businesses see more calls within 6 to 12 weeks after fixing category, photos and reviews. Busy categories take longer, and nobody can guarantee a position.

Does posting on Google improve ranking?

Posts mainly improve trust and clicks. Regular activity, photos and reviews together help your profile perform better.

Can I rank in areas far from my shop?

It is hard on Maps because distance matters. For far areas, rank through your website and helpful content instead.
